Home / All Bamwor Indexes / IBFM — Bamwor Military Strength Index What this index measures The Military Strength Index produces a composite score (0–100) reflecting a country’s overall military capability. It combines four dimensions: active military personnel (manpower), military spending as % of GDP (commitment), total GDP PPP (economic resources available for defense), and total population (mobilization potential). Countries that are large, wealthy, and heavily invested in defense score highest.
Methodology Each of the four variables is log-transformed and min-max normalized to a 0–25 range. The four components are summed for a final score of 0–100. Military spending uses the raw percentage (not inverted) since higher spending indicates greater military commitment.
Formula IBFM = norm(log(personnel), 0–25) + norm(log(mil_pct_gdp), 0–25) + norm(log(gdp_ppp), 0–25) + norm(log(population), 0–25)Variables used Active military personnel (Bamwor database) Military spending as % of GDP (Bamwor database) GDP PPP in USD (Bamwor database) Total population (Bamwor database) How to interpret Score 80–100: Global military superpower. Score 50–80: Major regional military power. Score 20–50: Moderate military capability. Score 0–20: Minimal military force.
Limitations Does not account for military technology, nuclear capability, alliances, or combat experience. Personnel counts may include reserves in some countries. GDP-based spending gives absolute capacity but not efficiency.
