Introduction

Background

According to the stipulations of the 1960 Treaty of Establishment that established the independent Republic of Cyprus, the United Kingdom maintained complete sovereignty and authority over two regions covering approximately 254 square kilometers -- Akrotiri and Dhekelia. The more extensive of these regions is known as the Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area, also referred to as the Eastern Sovereign Base Area.
