During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Cayman Islands were colonized by the British, with administration of the islands being conducted by Jamaica, another British colony, from 1863 onwards. In 1959, the islands were designated as a territory within the Federation of the West Indies. Following the dissolution of the Federation in 1962, the Cayman Islands opted to continue as a British dependency. The territory has evolved into an important offshore financial hub.
